A huge bird, measuring 4.3 ft (1.30 m) in height and weighing nearly 40 lbs (18 kg). Still, it flies. It prefers open scapes: grasslands, savannah and semi-desert up to 6,500 ft (2,000 m). Inhabits the northern arid regions, the Rift Valley and the central Highlands west to Masai Mara and east to Tsavo and Shimba Hills. Usually found solitary or in pairs. The male's nuptial display is very flashy.
