African white-backed vulture
'Gyps africanus'
Swahili: Tumbusi mgongo-mweupe
Best parks to see it: Widespread
The most abundant of Kenyan vultures. Present throughout the country except at the south coast and the Lake Victoria basin. Frequent in open or lightly wooded country, where herbivores roam. Nests on trees. It can be distinguished from the juvenile Rüppell's Griffon vulture, similar in colour, for its blackish bill at all ages. The common name is due to a white patch at the back, only present in the adult and only visible with wings extended.
